The liquid phase chromatography
Ionic liquids are used as additives in the mobile phase. Indeed, various works showed the interest of Ionic liquids to optimize the separations.
HPLC example: During the detection of basic molecules, and more particularly amines, it is frequent to observe distortions of peaks. This problem is due to interactions with the residual silanols of the still phases with silica. By their structures, Ionic liquids are capable of masking silanols so allowing the separation of molecules2.
The gas phase in chromatography
The peculiarity to be not volatile and stable thermically, made Ionic liquids of good candidates as new choices of liquids for the still phases in CPG. These new phases have original properties because they allow separating as well compounds apolar as polar compounds1.
